CICM Presents Responsible Care Management System (RCMS) Certification to Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM)

The Chemical Industries Council of Malaysia (CICM) presented the Responsible Care Management System (RCMS) certification to Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), in recognition of USM’s successful completion of the RCMS Implementation Programme for Institution of Higher Learning (IHL).

The certification was formally presented by the CICM Deputy Chairman, Mr Paul R Ellis to YBrs Professor Dr Wan Ahmad Jaafar Wan Yahaya, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Student Development Affairs and Alumni, USM -- representing the Vice Chancellor of USM, during a ceremony held on December 17, 2025 at the Main Campus of the Institute of Research in Molecular Medicine (INFORMM) in USM.

USM is the first institution of higher learning in Malaysia that has come onboard and pledged their commitment to the Responsible Care initiative in Malaysia. This certification reflects USM’s dedication in advancing its health, safety, environment and security (HSES) practices, also setting a benchmark for more IHLs to adopt Responsible Care. Their achievement also marks a significant step in aligning academia with industry standards for HSES governance.

While RCMS is tailored for the chemical industry in general, CICM introduced the RCMS Implementation Programme for Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) to broaden awareness and encourage adoption of Responsible Care principles within the academia. This programme was carried out with the support from the Social Security Organization (SOCSO) and also the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA).
